Heretics Film Review (Spoiler-Free)

Heretics is the latest horror film, produced by the twisted minds at A24. Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the co-writers of A Quiet Place 1 & 2, Heretic could be seen as another smash hit from the duo as a fan of their work myself. Released on November 1st, it has gotten off to a great start with critics and audiences alike.

This review will be spoiler-free, so no need to panic but here’s my honest opinion on the film.

Heretic tells the story of two missionaries Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton as they become part of a cat-and-mouse game when they go to speak the lord to a very sinister Mr Reed played by Hugh Grant.

Heretic is a tense atmospheric horror/thriller from start to finish, with Hugh Grant giving a terrific performance that will have your skin crawling the moment he appears on the screen. With Hugh Grant most known for his Rom-Com roles throughout the '90s and 2000s, seeing him play such a twisted character was refreshing and shone a whole new light on him as an actor, with this film giving him one of his best roles. He was such an uncomfortable presence in the film that he stood out the most.

Sophie Thatcher (known for her role as Natalie in Yellowjackets) plays Sister Barnes and Chloe East in her big breakout role as Sister Paxton and the pair are amazing onscreen. They manage to bounce off each other so well whilst playing the opposites of each other, as Sister Barnes is the headstrong rebellious character and Sister Paxton is the devoted Mormon.

I went into this movie not knowing how any of it would play out and I was left shocked and amazed at the performance, the unsettling-ness it created and the premise alone. I was scared, unsettled and hooked from the start and would recommend it if you want an out-of-pocket horror film that subverts your expectations.

Overall, I would give it 4 out of 5 Blueberry Pie candles 🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️
